Description
When my father died I felt I would die too. There were many years that we could not talk and much of it was due to his time overseas serving in the Navy Air Force. He told me he loved me for the very first time when I was 32. He assumed I knew. And I just needed to hear it. After that, we became very close. I enjoyed going to visit after teaching all day and just chatting. Sometimes he would tell me stories of when he was young and all the mischief he did. But sometimes he would talk about the war. Those times were few. Even after all those years the memories were like a fresh wound for him.
We took a trip to Washington, DC to visit my brother and sister-in-law in 2007. He asked me to look for a name on the Viet Nam Memorial Wall...the name of the only man in his unit that was killed. I had to have some help, but I found it and did a rubbing for him. It was like giving him a piece of gold.
Dad earned many medals...not all displayed here. The embroidered emblam in the center was in his casket, and the 3 bullets from the gun salute at his funeral.
He was a good man. Part Native American... ALL American...TRUE American.
